Abstract:

Our past is handed down to us in many different forms - buildings, monuments, artefacts, relics, works of art - and also in written or printed forms such as books, letters, journals, records, maps, charts, photographs and documents. The archivist collects, arranges, describes and stores these written and printed records, working to preserve them against the damaging effects of heat, light, damp, dirt and air pollution. Edwin Gleaves, Tennessee State Librarian and Archivist, lectures on the basic procedures for receiving, evaluating and stabilizing paper base collections. Initial decisions must be made about whether each item is worth preserving and what special treatment it may need from a trained conservator. Then a detailed review of stabilizing techniques is presented including descriptions of the materials, tools, and supplies that will be needed in these processes. The values of precise record-keeping is explained.
