Abstract:

At the time of his death in 1994, the Twentieth Century master, Paul Delvaux, was the last surviving member of the first generation of Surrealist painters. In this portrait, Delvaus reminisces about his family, himself, his art and the various key phases of his career. He describes in detail how all his visual ideas are derived from specific childhood memories and how these scenes have long been incorporated into his work. Delvaux is seen here as a young man (the earliest footage dates from 1945) and the documentary includes some unique shots of the extraordinary Musee Spitzner. Art Lives, from Arthaus, is a powerful and arresting series of documentaries on artists and art movements released for the first time in the English language.
