Abstract:
"The North Carolina Advancement School, [was] founded in November 1964 as a pet project of Terry Sanford ....Sanford's term ended in January 1965; his successor pledged support but ... by the spring of 1967 the staff began to look for new jobs .... Mark Shedd [was] ... so impressed by the open, creative atmosphere [at the school] that he quickly invited the staff to move to Philadelphia en masse."--P. 49-50.
