Abstract:

This thesis introduces conclusions about Stephen Covey's "The Leader in Me" (TLIM) program -- a performance character education program -- into the academic literature on character education. Using a phenomenological, case study methodology, the author surveyed fifth grade students, their teachers and their principal at a Utah elementary school about their perceptions of this character education program generally, and its impact on self-efficacy and social competence specifically. Students perceived increased self-efficacy and social competence as a result of TLIM program, and also perceived the program favorably overall. The teachers and the principal share these perceptions, with minor but noteworthy differences. Students and adults alike perceived a weaker relationship between TLIM program and academic achievement. Overall, these participants' perceptions suggest that TLIM program is helping this elementary school accomplish its goals for students, especially: increased personal responsibility, decreased negative behaviors, and increased positive social interactions.
