Perlocutionary Meaning offers an account of how the mutual knowledge rules that govern cooperative conversation evolve as a function of apparent violations of those rules and the consequent response.
Many apparent violations are characterized as intended to be recognized as intentionally reparable in the service of more dominating cooperative rules. Some violations, however, can not be so readily repaired by the listener. It is these latter violations that the author claims carry perlocutionary meaning.
Depending on how the violation is resolved the accepted meaning of such acts will fall into one of three categories according to the author. These categories effectively reflect consensual resolutions that the violator was either cooperatively careless, intentionally distancing or disciplining.
The work provides a detailed ontological characterization of the cooperative conversation domain with numerous examples of how these rules govern conversation and how apparent violations are commonly resolved.
Some empirical support is provided that new mutually recognized conversational rules generated via this process continue to govern the interpretation of future conversational exchanges.
