Abstract:

In "The case of the ice-cold hands": Nancy Banks visits Perry's office with five tickets for a horse race, all bought because Nancy insists the horse (who does win) smiled at her. But the young woman may not be as innocent as she seems. When Perry cashes in the tickets, Marvin Fremont, the employer of Nancy's brother, Rodney, swears they were purchased with money that Rodney stole from him. When Fremont turns up murdered, the police charge Nancy with crime. In "The case of the antic angel": Alcoholic businessman William Sherwood has been on the wagon for six months when he sees his ex-wife, Ruth. Sherwood had believed Ruth died in a plane crash, and besides being frantic to talk to Ruth, he's also understandably bewildered since his business partnership was purchased with the money from Ruth's airline insurance policy. When Sherwood gets a call to meet her at a bar he goes there, gets drunk, and leaves, only to find Ruth dead. By the time Perry arrives, the body has vanished, but Ruth later turns up in a wrecked car, dead of strangulation, with all clues pointing to William as the murderer.
