Abstract:

The papers include biographical and genealogical materials, correspondence, poetry, wills, obituaries, address books, diaries, ledgers, programs, and clippings. Of particular interest are correspondence with his wife while he was in Berkeley during the San Francisco earthquake (1906), information documenting the development of the Department of Pedagogy at the University of California at Berkeley, material concerning his activities as U.S. Commissioner of Education, and awards and tributes for his service as an educator, particularly at New York University, including his receipt of the Commendatore of the Order of the Crown of Italy (1932), and the Order of the Crown of Belgium (1933).
