Stirling tends to write trilogies, so it is a surprise to see this well written story, set in a rich alternate history universe, as a stand alone novel. Two centuries after a civilization halting asteroid strike on the earth, the British Empire--now based in India--is again rising to prominence. But dark forces from the far steppes of Russia threaten it. Captain Athelstane King of the Peshawar Lancers finds himself drawn into an adventure that will--of course--affect the future of the world.
You can't summarize a Stirling plot without sounding hokey. Hey! It's a fantasy novel set in an alternate universe. The characters are well drawn; the plot never lags; and the descriptions of the food make you want to head for the nearest Indian restaurant.
