Abstract:

"A main purpose of the present book is to show that one does not need to diminish research and teaching in science in order to enhance interest in the moral and philosophical aspects of the world. The fact is stressed that the deeper we dig into actual science the more its links with philosophy become obvious. In this book, we attempt to start from the way in which science is understood by the scientist in his most creative and critical moods. However, we shall also attempt to establish links with the historical types of philosophy like idealism and materialism that have actually served as supports of moral, religious, and political creeds"--Preface.
