Resumen:

The Governor's Press Office is responsible for publicizing events of the governor's administration. In fulfilling this function, it maintains photodocumentation of such events, particularly those directly involving the governor, and releases photographs to the media.

Series currently includes files from terms of Eugene Foss (1911-1914)--gubernatorial and earlier campaigns, with accompanying correspondence; Endicott Peabody (1963-1965)--campaign, family, and ceremonial photographs, national figures, localities; Edward King (1979-1983)--swearing-in ceremonies, dedication of John F. Kennedy Library, with public college officials; Michael Dukakis (1983-1991), William Weld (1991-1997, but also including 1990 campaign), Argeo Paul Cellucci (1997-2001), Jane Swift (2001-2003), and Mitt Romney (2003-2007, Jan.-Feb. 2003 only); also State House funeral (Oct. 27, 1998) for Francis Sargent (1969-1975).

Peabody photographs, 1962-1966. 6 doc. boxes and 1 box:

Consists of photographic prints and some negatives, mostly black and white, primarily taken during Peabody's term as governor (1963-1964). Events depicted include bill signings, galas, swearing-in ceremonies, speeches, visits from foreign officials, political conventions, conferences, television appearances, and construction sites. Also included are family photos and images from Peabody's 1962 gubernatorial campaign and his 1966 campaign for U.S. Senate. Additional photographs from this period are located in the Endicott Peabody Papers and Photographs at the Massachusetts Historical Society.

Dukakis photographs, 1964-1990 (bulk 1983-1990). 18 doc. boxes:

Subseries consists primarily of photographic negatives and prints taken during Dukakis's second term (1983-1991) at events such as bill signings, galas, swearing in ceremonies, speeches, visits from foreign dignitaries, press conferences, ceremonies, meet and greets in the governor's office, and so-called legislative time in House and Senate chambers. Photographs were chiefly taken in the governor's office, but also in House and Senate chambers, other rooms in the State House, and external locations. Also included are photographs of the 1982-1983 gubernatorial campaign. Images often reflect major themes of the Dukakis administration and legislation sessions including: drunk driving, drinking, crime, public health, and universal and civil rights.

Items are in three sequences: prints (both black and white and colored) by size ( 8.5" x 11", some with accompanying negatives (boxes 1-7) and 5" x 7" or smaller (boxes 8-11)), followed by a large grouping of unrelated sleeved negatives (boxes 12-18). There are associated items such as newspaper clippings and letters. Each sequence is arranged chronologically with undated items, arranged by theme, at the end. Named staff photographers are Kurt Sharpp, Edgar Barrett, N. Leslie Hamilton, and K. Dodge.

There are also logs (1 record center carton) consisting of photo order forms, 1985-1989 (Jan. 1987, July, Sept.-Nov. 1988 lacking), chiefly for images of persons receiving special proclamations, some of which can be linked to negatives in the series. Information on sheets may include: proclamation title, date, names of people or group depicted, name of photo recipient, roll and negative numbers, and distribution dates. Some forms include news releases and/or proclamation schedules. For series that may contain related detail see: Massachusetts. Governor's Press Office. Press releases (GO11/20) and: Massachusetts. Governor's Office of Constituency Services. Proclamations (GO34/235X).

For additional Weld photographs see: Massachusetts. Governor's Chief of Staff ((M-Ar)505)--Weld/Cellucci/Swift--box 153. For additional photographs from terms noted above and others, especially those of Christian Herter (1953-1957) see: Massachusetts. Dept. of Public Works. Public Information Office. Public relations photographs ((M-Ar)162). For other gubernatorial visual materials see: Massachusetts. Governor's Press Office. Speeches and testimonies ((M-Ar)10).
