Abstract:

Album of chiefly photographic postcards and loose photographic prints collected by Friedrich Wilhelm Schuler that depict locations and people associated with the extended family of Richard Wagner and the Bayreuther Festspiele, circa 1897-1930.

Images of members of the extended family of Richard Wagner include his wife, Cosima Wagner, and their children Siegfried Wagner and Eva Wagner Chamberlain. Many images depict Winifred Wagner, the wife of Siegfried Wagner, and their children Wieland, Friedelind, Wolfgang, and Verena. Several images depict Houston Stewart Chamberlain, the husband of Eva Wagner Chamberlain, and a group portrait includes Henrietta Karop Klindworth and Karl Klindworth, the adoptive parents of Winifred Wagner. Another group portrait includes Daniela von Bülow Thode, the daughter of Cosima Wagner and her first husband, Hans von Bülow.

Many of the postcards and photographic prints include correspondence or notes as well as depicting the correspondent. Notes from members of the Wagner family include Siegfried Wagner, Winifred Wagner, and Eva Wagner Chamberlain. Other individuals with images and correspondence include author Michael Georg Conrad and conductor Hugo Rüdel, as well as notes from singers that include Anna Bahr-Mildenburg and Louise Grandjean. Other identified individuals include singer Emmy Krüger, composer Engelbert Humperdinck, and Duchess Marie Gabrielle, the wife of Rupprecht, the Crown Prince of Bavaria, as well as portraits of Friedrich Wilhelm Schuler and his wife, Johanna Schuler.

Several images depict visits by Adolf Hitler to the Bayreuther Festspiele and Bayreuth, as well as him socializing with members of the Wagner family, including Winifred, Friedelind, and Verena Wagner. An image also depicts Hitler with Joseph Goebbels and his daughter, Helga Susanne Goebbels.

Views of buildings in Bayreuth include the Festspielhaus; Wahnfried, the home of the Wagner family; and Chamberlain-Haus, the home of Houston Stewart Chamberlain.
