Abstract:

Six semi-bound scrapbooks containing the published version of A.J. Pickett's History as well as original manuscripts, letters, and legal documents, colored portraits, sketches, maps, and coins.

The volumes contain information and comments concerning the French, Spanish, and English colonization and government of the Southeastern U.S.; the Indian cultures of the Cherokees, Chickasaws, Choctaws, and Creeks; battles in the Ala. area such as the Battle of Burnt Corn, Horseshoe Bend, the Massacre at Fort Mims; and individuals who participated in the exploration and development of Ala., including Hernando de Soto, William Bartram, Lachlan and Alexander McGillivray, Aaron Burr, Tecumseh, William Weatherford, Osceola, and Andrew Jackson.

A large number of original manuscripts were inserted, taped, and glued throughout the text, including letters and documents written or signed by Ala. Governor William W. Bibb, Tenn. Governor Willie Blount, British Governor of West Florida Sir Peter Chester, William C.C. Claiborne, John Coffee, Samuel Dale, Andrew Ellicott, John Floyd, Edmund P. Gaines, Edmund Genet, French minister to the U.S.; Benjamin Hawkins, Mississippi Territorial Governor David Holmes, Ga. Governor James Jackson, William R. King, Gabriel Moore, John Randolph, Winthrop Sargent, Ga. Governor Edward Telfair, Martin Van Buren, George Whitefield, James Wilkinson, and Marinus Willett.

The sketches and portraits provide images of many of the correspondents listed above and also include Thomas Bibb, Timpooche Barnard, Bienville, d'Iberville, La Salle, Pushmataha, Tustenuggee Thlucco, Tustenuggee and Charles and John Wesley.

The maps range in size from 35 x 40 cm to 18 x 23 cm and contain surveys of the southeastern U.S., concentrating on the Mississippi River, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.

Many of the inserted and taped documents have been removed. Acid-free partial photocopies have been placed with the volumes to indicate their original locations, and acid-free nonbuffered paper and protective sleeves have also been inserted to protect the large number of glued materials and sketches remaining in the volumes.
