In his third revised edition in 4 years, Lester Brown provides one of the most comprehensive explanations of environmental crises facing the world. Brown begins with the problems of “peak oil,” water shortages, lost of forests, growth of deserts, soil erosion, and species extinctions, including depleted fisheries, along with addressing global warming. Global warming, if left unchecked, could melt the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets causing a 39-foot rise in sea levels worldwide. All of these factors could, in his view, lead to a literal collapse of civilization, as evidenced by the recent increase in “failing states.” “Plan A” is to continue as if none of these issues are major problems.
Brown’s “Plan B,” conceptualized at the Earth Policy Institute, aims to avert these crises. The plan begins by focusing on the United Nations Millennium Development goals, aimed at reducing extreme. He moves on to plans to restore forests and soil quality. Crucial to all of this is limiting global population to 8 billion. In a book filled with dire warnings, Brown includes this claim. “Filling the family planning gap may be the most urgent item on the global agenda”(137).
Other aspects of “Plan B” focus on being more energy efficient and developing renewable energy. They include urban design changes to encourage mass transportation and the banning of incandescent light bulbs. The centerpiece is to decrease carbon emissions by 80 percent in just 12 years, by 2020, by creating a wartime-like effort to develop wind power. Brown suggests using idled US auto factories to produce the 1.5 million needed wind turbines. Then wind power would be driving a US fleet of plug-in hybrid cars.
In a rare moment of humor, Brown claims to get “7 miles per potato” while riding his bicycle (200). I highly recommend this book.
