Pizza, football, beer and laughter-what more could one want?

Having read nearly all of John Grisham's legal thrillers, I was hesitant when I picked up this one because it isn't his usual style. I had the same initial reaction to Skipping Christmas and Bleachers, and I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed both of them. Playing for Pizza is a fun, adventurous lighter read that I found difficult to put down at night. I am a football fan, and having cheered for the Buffalo Bills for decades (brief cameo in this story), and living through the losses of four superbowls due to disastrous playing, I completely related to the storyline from the get go. What I really enjoyed though, was the detail Grisham provided about Parma, Italy and many other cities and regions he describes throughout. I'm not a traveler and have never had a strong urge to fly around the globe to see Europe, but this story has picqued my interest in a visit to "the boot" see if the portrait he portrays is as wonderful as it sounds. You can't help but smell the cheese and pastas, and taste the wine as you read through Rick's cultural dining experiences (stereotype tough guy quarterback with no affinity for opera or fine dining). His unplanned and initially opposed visit to Italy opened his eyes to the finer things that don't require the fame and notoriety achieved in the NFL. Thanks John Grisham for a change in pace that worked out quite nicely.
