Abstract:

A tribute to the stage, film, and television work of director George Schaefer, featuring interviews with people who have worked with him. Mike Wallace interviews Ed Wynn about Schaefer and about Wynn's own career. Tony Randall joins Wynn and Wallace; the three discuss Randall's career, comedy, and Schaefer. Mildred Trares (Mrs. George Schaefer) sings I'm biding my time. Kim Hunter and Torin Thatcher discuss Write me a murder, currently on Broadway and directed by Schaefer. Schaefer introduces a scene from Write me a murder, which is then performed by Ethel Griffies, James Donald, and Denholm Elliott. Wallace talks with Griffies about her career and about Schaefer. Dorothy Stickney and Mildred Natwick talk with Wallace about Arsenic and old lace, which Schaefer will direct for the Hallmark hall of fame series. The three are joined by Randall and Wynn; the group discusses theater superstitions. William Warfield sings It ain't necessarily so. Warfield, Morton Da Costa, and Schaefer join the discussion. Schaefer says a few words about each of the guests. Wynn discusses comedy and drama, and his life. Warfield, Schaefer and Wallace discuss the Hallmark hall of fame presentation of The green pastures. Da Costa discusses his work with Schaefer. In a film by Joyce Davidson shot during Arsenic and old lace rehearsals, Schaefer explains how he puts together a live television show, and Davidson interviews Boris Karloff. Schaefer, Randall, and Wallace discuss Arsenic and old lace, live television, and Schaefer's direction. Schaefer discusses his relationship with Julie Harris, then the two read a scene from the Hallmark hall of fame presentation of Victoria Regina. Harris discusses Schaefer's directing. Warfield sings Hold on, accompanied on the piano by American composer Willard Straight. Trares sings Moon River and talks about life with Schaefer. Da Costa discusses his direction of Schaefer in Rain. Schaefer briefly speaks about himself and his work.
