Dedication to John Lord Viscount Bracly [sic], signed on E3 verso: H. Lawes.
"Joannis Miltoni Londinensis Poemata" has separate dated title page, pagination, and register (²A-E⁸ F⁴). With imprint: "Londini, Typis R.R. Prostant ad Insignia Principis, in Coemeterio D. Pauli, apud Humphredum Moseley. 1645." It was probably also issued separately (cf. Wing M2159).
First edition.
In the last line of the imprint of some copies "S. Pauls" occurs without the "S."
"The Stationer to the reader" signed Humph. Mosely -- leaves a3 and a4.
"The work contains all the poems written by Milton up to the date of its publication, with the exception of those "On the death of a fair infant dying of a cough" and "At a vacation exercise in the Colledge," both of which appeared in the second edition of the poems, 1673. ... It is the first published work of Milton's to bear the name in full. AlthougH registered on October 6, 1645, the precise day of its publication was January 2 of the following year."--Catalogue of original and early editions of some of the poetical and prose works of English writers from Wither to Prior, entry 572.

Signatures: a⁴ A-G⁸ H⁴, ²A-E⁸ F⁴ (a1 and ²F4 blank).
Engraved frontispiece portrait of Milton by W[illiam]. M[arshall], within an oval inscribed: "Ioannis Miltoni Angli Effigies Anno Ætatis ViGess: Pri." and with four lines of Greek at the foot.
Head-pieces; initials.
Library copy: the last line of imprint reads: "Arms in Pauls Church-yard. 1645." Blank a1 has been removed. Binding: In full dark-green morocco. The spine divided into six panels, each framed with gilt double lines; with gilt text in second panel and a gilt flower stamped in other panels. Covers are tooled in simple panel in gilt, created with a variable width triple-rule fillet. The board edges and turn-ins are gilt with the same decorative roll. Marbled endpapers. Provenance: Copy owned by Lewis Stucley, chaplain to Oliver Cromwell and Sir George Stucley Buck. With bookplate of Walter Sandilands, 8th Lord of Torphicken (1707-1765), with motto "Spero Meliora" on front paste-down. Inscription on front flyleaf reads: "To James Walter Sandilands. In Memory of dear Aunt Jane who died 6th Feby. 1859." Purchased from Sotheby's May 28, 1934.
