Abstract:

A review of the history of assessment centers and the evolution of assessment center testing accompanies this examination of police promotion testing; written examinations in the promotion process; the development of a proper attitude and approach; the assessment of traditional skills; and effective performance in group exercises, oral presentation exercises, a counseling simulation exercise, and a problem analysis exercise. An assessment center process emerges as a reliable method of candidate testing in determining performance potential because it assimilates several work-related tasks that evaluate candidates in actual job-related situational exercises. A number of police agencies recognize the use of the assessment center as a development tool for participants. Candidate participation in an assessment process, be it successful or not, tends to produce a more knowledgeable and motivated worker. The text focuses on becoming familiar with the development and philosophy of assessment centers.
