Abstract:

The program opens with a pan of the crowd in the auditorium, some chanting "We want Jack." Philadelphia Democratic Chairman William J. Green, Jr., introduces Kennedy. Kennedy expresses regret that this is not the fifth debate and comments on the nearness of Election Day. Citizens' votes are cast not only for themselves but for future generations and every free nation of the world. Unless the U.S. is moving at home, it cannot move the cause of freedom around the world. Nixon calls Kennedy's talk irresponsible, but Kennedy has served his country; he runs for the presidency to achieve the kind of America for which every American family fought and in which every American family believes. Kennedy describes the kind of America that he believes in, commenting on issues of employment, inflation, education, medical care for the aged through social security, housing, farm policy, distressed areas, automation, natural resources, and civil rights.
