Abstract:

E.C. Segar created Popeye the Sailor in his "Thimble Theatre" comic strip back in 1929. The character was only intended to pass through one particular story but seemed to have ideas of his own. The one-eyed sailor took over the strip and has now been going strong for 60 years. To celebrate this fact we bring you a collection of vintage Popeye strips featuring some of the best work of Elzie Segar himself and samples of the work of other artists who have had the unenviable task of continuing the strip after the untimely death of this master cartoonist/writer in 1938.
