Abstract:

Provides teachers with everything they need to set up a portfolio system and use it to inform instruction and assessment in a balanced learning program. The basic steps-from how to get started and what to keep in a porfolio to practical solutions to day-to-day problems -- criteria charts to help identify "competent" student work and guide students towards achieving success -- baseline samples-how to use a student's first work samples from the beginning of the year as a starting point to deal with a range of abilities and understandings -- ways to use curriculum outcomes and student samples to guide instruction -- how to involve students actively in choosing, reflecting, and justifying choices and developing new learning goals based on portfolio samples -- new and better approaches to assessment that involve the child, parent and teacher.
