The portrait is taken from a line engraving by Geille, the head of which is copied quite closely from the full-length portrait of Lafayette painted in 1822 by Ary Scheffer; the military uniform is from the painting by Gerard"--P.  of cover.
"One hundred and twenty impressions of the plate have been printed on imperial Japan paper and the plate cancelled. Eleven of the impressions are artist's proofs"--P.  of cover.
