The majority of portraits are original photographs (including some cyanotypes) by noted photographers Arnold Genthe, Peter A. Juley & Son, William Shewell Ellis, and others. This group also includes photographic and photomechanical copies of portraits, drawings, prints and sculpture by various artists. Three items (nos. 7, 44, and 45) are accompanied by original envelopes or handwritten letters. The majority of images have a vertical orientation.

Abstract:

This group contains more than 100 portraits of artist and illustrator Joseph Pennell (1857-1926); a few of his wife Elizabeth Robins Pennell (1855-1936); and about twenty portraits of family, friends, and associates. Over forty photos show Pennell working at the printing press--inking and rubbing plates, examining prints, or sketching. Many of these formal and informal portrayals were used to illustrate the books: The Adventures of an Illustrator (1925) and the Life and Letters of Joseph Pennell (1929).
