Abstract:

Since 1999, caricaturist Rafael Barajas (el Fisgón) has been doing a systematic revision of the graphic art of Jose Guadalupe Posada, reconstructing his political biography. The resulting investigation (published fragmented since 2002) is polemic and proves false some of the most established conceptions of the myth of Posada. Barajas concludes that the noted engraver never worked for the newspaper ̈El Hijo del Ahuizotë, did not collaborate with the Flores Magón brothers, was in favor of Porfirio Díaz almost all his life and was part of fierce campaigns against Francisco I. Madero, Emiliano Zapata and other Revolution and rebel leaders. The book provides evidence that far from the stereotype of ̈Intellectual precursor of the Mexican Revolution̈, Posada was a man of his time: a modest graphic artist and artisan publisher, a defender of the working class and a graphic chronicler and a ground-breaking artist. The book also examines the graphic production of Manuel Alfonso Manilla, whose artwork has many times been wrongly assigned as Posada̓s work.
