Abstract:

PTSD has been recognized since the American Civil War. Later called shell shock and battle fatigue, it received most recent attention as a result of the Vietnam War. The APA in its DSM-III-R has expanded the definition of this phenomenon to include survivors of disasters and other violent experiences. This telecourse discusses diagnostic criteria and is aimed at helping the primary care physician recognize and respond with appropriate referral when encountering this condition in his or her practice.
