If you live in a small community undergoing change, especially new immigrants entering your community, you must read this book. The author presents an unbiased look at a Jewish group that came to a small town in Iowa. The town changed--was it for better or worse? Each reader must reach his own conclusion. However, I can seen my own community in the book. I see the immigrants coming to our town and keeping to themselves. I see the the town locals gather in the cafe and talk about what is happening. They shake their heads but are hesitant to put out a hand for a handshake.
If any thing, this book shows how hard change is for a small community which has deep roots and is proud of its past. However, as the businesses in small towns search for economic development, change is inevitable. The slaughterhouse that revived Postville also brought problems. It is up to a community to try to deal with these problems in a positive, productive way that builds community. After reading the book, I wonder if this can happen and how long it will take --both in Postville and in my community. As the author of the book searched for his own Jewish identity so the town had to find what its identity was.
