Abstract:

If there are books written to defend a thesis or a man, others are, on the contrary, opposed and fought "against". Against a certain conception of literature and certain expectations of the reader, against a page of history (1848) and the convicts of all sides, progressives and conservatives, against a way of being a bourgeois, a lover or an ambitious. Against himself, too, the young romantic author of the first version of 1845 ... Flaubert's sentimental education is one of those. Because he wanted to break with Salammbo, as he had wished to forget Madame Bovary, Flaubert undertook this novel full of anger and things to say against his time. He, the partisan of impersonality, the founder of "autotelic" literature, he decided to settle his accounts and he is already anticipating his future promise "to set foot in the dish, to be violent, pitiless, and spit a nice glaviot in the face of the Mediocracy." Uncomprehended, the sentimental education will be badly received and yet it remains perhaps our most modern novel.--Amazon.com
