Abstract:

(Critical) This program, part of a series from the American Journal of Nursing Company, discusses care of the neurologically disabled patient during the rehabilitation stage. Preparation for home care is outlined. Reinforcement of patient/family teaching needs, the rehabilitation process, the importance of self-care, and sexual adjustment and instruction are emphasized. Readjustment, emotional support, grieving and mourning, and the necessary patient reevaluation of goals and environment are discussed. Two patients, one with spinal cord injury and the other a stroke victim, are paralleled as far as the disabilities and nursing interventions. The program should be used in conjunction with a knowledgable instructor and with the rest of the series. It is clear and concise, and highly recommended for nurse practitioners in rehabilitation, neurology, neurosurgery, general medical/surgical, as well as occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech therapists.
