Abstract:

The collection comprises ca. 790 items. The bulk of the collection consists of 657 lithographs by Paul Gavarni; of these 454 are bound into 12 volumes, and 203 are loose prints. All but one of the Gavarni lithographs are in black and white. There is also a monograph with 80 plates printed from original drawings by Gavarni but transferred to stone by Paul Mechel. Also included is artwork by numerous other artists from the 19th and 20th centuries, mainly French, but also German, Greek, and American, and a small number of anonymous prints.

Among the prints by other French artists are five prints by Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet, four prints by Jules Chéret, six prints by Honoré Daumier, 20 prints by Denis Auguste Marie Raffet, and a bound volume of 30 lithographs by Charles Vernier issued by Charivari under the title La Rigolbochomanie.

Among the artworks by other artists is a loose-leaf copy of Walpurgisnacht by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe with woodcuts by Ernst Barlach. Also included are eight posters advertising the Chicago-based magazine The inland printer, dating from 1897 to 1899, including four by Joseph Christian Leyendecker; four issues of the magazine The propeller published in Camp Greene, Charlotte, N.C.; a steel plate by Carl Mayer for a reproductive engraving after a painting by Jean-Louis Bézard; two anonymous drawings; a watercolor painting by Erwin Weiss, printed postcard; and two lithograph posters, one by Jeffrey Mueller after Conrad Felixmüller, and one by Ernst Fuchs.
