Abstract:
Holograph manuscript recounting Harris' time spent as a prisoner-of-war at the Tobacco Warehouse Prison in Richmond, Virginia during the Civil War (1861-1862). Harris and others were captured at Ball's Bluff and held for up to four months. Also includes a letter from Harris, dated 1893, stating that the manuscript was smuggled out of the prison sewn into another soldier's overcoat and that this was the first book published on the subject of the Civil War when it came out in 1862 under the title Prison-life in the Tobacco Warehouse at Richmond. Cased with the author's copy of the published book.
