Abstract:

This report presents results from RAND's pilot study of how Los Angeles area public schools and districts raise private resources. This study addresses three major questions related to schools and districts raising support: 1) Who are the private givers to public education?; 2) How do schools and districts attract private support? Through school-based organizations? Through school and district personnel? What mechanisms do schools and districts use to attract private resources?; and 3) What types of support are provided? What are the contributions used for? The results are based on interviews with superintendents and district staff, school principals, and local education foundation (LEF) representatives that were conducted during the fall and winter of 2000.
