Abstract:

(Producer) This three-part program uses case studies to demonstrate the way people handle everyday stress through unconscious psychological defenses. Part One explains the unconscious and illustrates the way defense mechanisms evolve fromchildhood experiences, with particular emphasis on repression. Part Two focuses on avoidance, denial and undoing, explaining why we unconsciously use these defenses. Part Three describes the way we use fantasy and regression to reduce tensions, noting that persistent use of these defenses may indicate mental illness. Additionally, the symbolic relationship of dreams to waking experience and the function of dreams in helping to ease anxieties is discussed.
