Abstract:

Manuscript, in a single hand, of two drafts of Beerbohm's essay Quia Imperfectum, which concerns imperfect masterpieces generally, and Johann Tischbein's unfinished portrait of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in particular. One draft is written in ink, and contains relatively few emendations in addition to the comment on the first page, "To Printer: Please preserve my punctuation exactly. MB." The second draft is written in both ink and pencil and is heavily emended, with many excised passages, additional text, and drawings of caricatures in the margins.
