Abstract:

This study has attempted to estimate the likely need for grain cars and the likely size of the active grain car fleet through the year 2001, should no additional cars be added. Historical trends in both export and domestic movements have been analyzed as well as the relationship between total grain movement and movement by rail in recent years. This information was combined with expected levels of U.S. grain production and exports in a model that projected grain car requirements.
