摘要:
Provides an overview of the rain forests of the world and describes the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest and the life that they support. The temperate rain forests along the Northwest coast of North America are worlds ruled by water. Moss clings to the trunks of massive trees and hangs from their branches. Ferns crowd the soggy forest floor. Some old-growth conifers measure more than 40 feet around. It would take eight people holding hands to encircle one of these trees. With such an array of towering giants, it's easy to see why these forests are prized for their timber. Today, more than 85 percent of the original forests have been cut down, leaving little room for species struggling to survive. We realize now the necessity of preserving this region before countless organisms are faced with extinction.
