Abstract:

Annotation

The children of Philip III of Spain (15781621) and Margarita de Austria (15841611) inherited great power over their subjects: the ability to declare war or make peace, to advocate religious doctrine, and to exert great influence over art, culture, and taste. The vast leadership provided by this single generation raises the question of how royal families learned the roles they played in court, country, and on the international stage. In Reared to Reign, Hoffman reveals the educational process and formative experiences of children in the royal household of early modern Spain are unveiled, presenting a deeply researched and stimulating study.
