Abstract:

"The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of tutorial group therapy in facilitating psychosocial adjustment and correcting some aspects of reading retardation in delinquent children who manifest a reading disability in conjunction with severe emotional disturbance. The stated hypotheses were as follows: (1) That tutorial group therapy will improve psychosocial adjustment and that the tutorial group therapy subjects will show greater improvement in adjustment than the members in either of the other two groups. (2) That tutorial group therapy will improve reading ability and that the tutorial group therapy subjects will show greater improvement in reading than the members in either of the other two groups. The results of the present investigation seem to warrant the following conclusions: (1) Tutorial group therapy affected greater improvement in psychosocial adjustment than either group remedial reading or interview group therapy. (2) Tutorial group therapy resulted in improved reading ability and the tutorial therapy group showed a greater tendency toward improvement (though not statistically significant) than did the remedial reading group or the interview therapy group. (3) The greatest positive change in psychosocial adjustment and the greatest improvement in reading took place in the group which received tutorial group therapy. This volume's chapters discuss the study, highlighting the problem; related literature; procedure in collecting data; results; discussion; and conclusions, implications, and suggestions for further research."
