Abstract:

Presents the story of Ronald Reagan's life with commentary by contemporaries, historians and members of his family. Part 2 begins with the buildup of military spending which would eventually triple the national debt. To respond to the "Soviet threat" Reagan initiates the Strategic Defense Initiative while demonstrators clamor for a "nuclear freeze". He faces a personal crisis in the Iran "arms for hostages" deal even as he engineers summit meetings with Gorbachev seeking an end to the nuclear weapons threat. In the decisive year of 1989 after arms agreements are signed the Fall of the Berlin Wall is followed by the rapid fall of other Eastern European communist governments. Five years after leaving office Reagan announces he has Alzheimer's disease and drops from public view.
