Abstract:

After the recent archaeological finding of a colonial pluvial cistern beneath the western side of the Museo Nacional de la Muerte (National Museum of Death) in Aguascalientes, architect and interior designer Agostino Bossi (b. Italy 1941) of the Universit Degli Studi di Napoli Federico II lead a project of architectonic rehabilitation. The mystic and mysterious atmosphere of the construction inspired a new space that emulated the Aztec underworld of Mictlan, specifically design to exhibit the most precious piece of the collection: an Aztec quartz crystal skull representing the god Iztac Tehuiotl. The museum houses a permanent collection of 2000 pieces related to the topic of death and collected throughout his life by graphic artist Octavio Bajonero Gil (b. Michoacán, 1940) who acquired folkart as well as art by José Guadalupe Posada (an Aguascalientes native), Francisco Toledo, Roberto Montenegro, Manuel Manilla amongst others. The book documents the architectonic rescue and rehabilitation project lead by Bossi, a clear example of the contemporary Italian School of Museography where the harmonic function of space, light, materials and architectural design are the main elements of the cognitive experience of an equipped space.
