Abstract:

The Bayou Bend records trace the formation, administration, and activities of the museum facility known as Bayou Bend from 1960 to the present, as well as Ima Hogg's efforts from the 1920s through the 1960s to build a decorative arts collection for Bayou Bend. Much of the material predates the opening of Bayou Bend in 1966, specifically, the Miscellaneous Subjects and Docent Files, Dealer/Collector Files, and Collections Information. These should be used together with materials from the Archives' other Record Groups for a more complete account of Bayou Bend before 1965/66.

Materials which date from the 1965 appointment of first Curator (currently Director) David B. Warren to the present offer a largely complete account of the administration, activities, and policies of Bayou Bend. Most of the series in this Record Group commence with Warren's tenure, and many of the various record types increase significantly during his curatorship. These include, most notably, the provisional docent files, information on tours, chronological correspondence, and the Curator's miscellaneous subject files.

The materials include significant correspondence with Ima Hogg. Most important in this respect are the Dealer/Collector files, though occasional Hogg correspondence also can be found in the Collections Information, Docent, and Miscellaneous Subjects files.

Materials for more recent years continue the varied and complete nature of the Bayou Bend records, although it should be noted that reader files are missing for 1978 through 1979.
