Abstract:

Correspondence, accounts, legal papers, petitions, muster rolls, and related records documenting many aspects of the superintendency's administration of the Dakota, Ojibwe, and Winnebago tribes within its jurisdiction, which included present-day Minnesota and eastern North and South Dakota. It was served by the St. Peter's Agency near Fort Snelling and the Winnebago and Chippewa agencies in central Minnesota.

Subjects covered include treaties, lands, intertribal hostilities, Indian subsistence, annuities, claims, the location and management of agencies, traders, employees, missionaries and mission schools, and the purchase and transportation of supplies.
