Opmerkingen: The Symposium on Music Criticism, held at Harvard University on May 1-3, 1947, gathered an audience of over 800, including "critics, teachers, representatives of radio and motion picture companies, book publishers, performing artists and composers." (E. Forbes, p. 104) The stated aim of the conference was "to initiate a fundamental re-examination of the principles of music criticism and a discussion of critical problems which have been brought into prominence by conditions in modern society." Papers were read by E.M. Forster, Roger Sessions, Edgar Wind, Olga Samaroff, Virgil Thomson, Otto Kinkeldy, Paul Henry Lang, and Huntington Cairns. These papers were subsequently published in the volume Music and Criticism: A Symposium, edited by Richard F. French.
Several compositions were commissioned for the event and received their premieres. The Walden String Quartet premiered Piston's Quartet, no. 3, Schoenberg's String Trio, op. 45, and Martinu's Quartet, no. 6. Robert Shaw's Collegiate Chorale premiered Hindemith's Apparebit Repentina Dies, Malipiero's La Terra, and Copland's In the Beginning. The Martha Graham Dance Company premiered William Schuman's Night Journey and presented Carlos Chavez's Dark Meadow (not a premiere).
The conference was supported by the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation in the Library of Congress, the Nieman Foundation, Mrs. A.W. Erikson, and Mr. and Mrs. John Nicolas Brown.
