Abstract:

Red Studio offers us a selection of 45 colour and black and white prints. Robinson's personal survey gives us a succinct, potted history of lino cuts as an art form; it also gives us cameos from the Otago arts scene over the past 20-30 years, and it charts the artist's own development. Robinson is a versatile and much-loved New Zealand artist with a loyal following. His work appears in many private collections throughout the country, and he has exhibited in galleries from the deep south of New Zealand to the New Zealand Consulate in New York. The selection shows us how widely Robinson ranges in his choice of subject matter, and how far he can stretch a process which he describes as 'a simple [one], stamp-making really, and no more sophisticated than a potato cut'. Straightforward the process may be, but Robinson's eye for line, rhythm, and balance is exacting, and his gentle, ludic sense of humour shows a prankster-like intelligence. This tender wit not only animates many of the images; it also runs through his compelling, laconic commentary.
