OCLC号码: 23670397
语言注释: Old French.
注意: Ms. codex.
Title from opening rubric.
Collation: Parchment, fol. ii (parchment, i is pastedown) + 59 (foliated 1-59) + ii (parchment, ii is pastedown) ; 1-7⁸ (+3) ; horizontal catchwords in inner margin of verso of last leaf of each quire.
Layout: Written in 2 columns of 30 lines, frame-ruled in lead; 59v blank.
Script: Written in a Gothic book hand of the late 13th century; different, possibly later, hand at 58r-59r.
Decoration: 1. Historiated initial (4-line) at 1r in gold, rose, and blue with St. Benedict delivering the Rule to four nuns -- 2. Marginal decorations at 1r inhabited with a dragon, and hounds chasing a hare and a stag -- 3. Initials (2- to 4-line) at beginning of each chapter, alternating blue initials with red penwork decoration and red initials with blue penwork; penwork flourishes extend into margins -- 4. Rubricated text throughout.
Binding: Red velvet over oak boards with brass trim along edges, probably early 19th-century; clasps missing. Binding stabilized in 2005 by Richard C. Baker of St. Louis, Missouri.
Origin: Written in France, probably in the vicinity of Metz, in the latter decades of the 13th century. The historiated initial, the feminization of certain passages of the Rule, and the use of the vernacular all indicate that it was specifically intended for nuns, quite possibly for the Abbey of Sainte-Glossinde.
Provenance: 1. Belonged to the Abbey of Sainte-Glossinde in Metz, as per a strip of paper pasted to bottom margin at 25r, bearing following inscription: "Ego soror Claudia de Grilly promitto stabilitatem et co[n]versionem meorum morum et obedientiam secundum regulam Sancti Benedicti coram Deo et sanctis eius in hoc monasterio quod est costructum in honore Sancti Sulpitii et Sancte Glodesindis virginis in presentia d[omi]ni Benedicti abbatis Sancti Arnulphi et D[omi]no." Hand appears to date to the 15th century -- 2. Belonged to S. Germot as per the catalogue of L. Potier (1869) -- 3. Sold by Potier to the Librairie Tross in 1869 as per the 1884 notice of Meyer -- 4. Possession of William Horatio Crawford of Lakeland, Cork, as per armorial bookplate on inside front cover and his sale (Sotheby's, 12 March 1891) -- 5. Sold to Ellis as per De Ricci -- 6. Armorial bookplate of Sir Thomas Brooke of Armitage Bridge, inside front cover -- 7. Possession of Sir John Arthur Brooke as per his sale (Sotheby's, 25 May 1921) -- 8. Purchased by W.J. Leighton as per De Ricci -- 9. Belonged to Acton Griscom of High Point, New Jersey as per De Ricci -- 10. Purchased from Harper, 11 February 1955.

摘要:

A copy of the Rule of St. Benedict with accompanying spiritual works, almost certainly made for a female Benedictine community in the late 13th century. The vows of a 15th-century nun, Claude de Grilly, are pasted onto fol. 25r; she belonged to the Abbey of Sainte-Glossinde, the Benedictine nunnery of Metz. Codex contains: 1. the Rule of St. Benedict in French (Lorrain dialect), from 1r to 30v -- 2. A spiritual work that Meyer, in his 1884 study of this manuscript, calls Li livres des tribulations, running from 30v to 55v -- 3. A poem called the Chanson d'amors de pure povreteit, from 55v to 56v, which Meyer transcribed in his study, positing a Franciscan origin for this text -- 4. A short treatise on the spiritual comfort of God, and on pride and humility, running from 56v to 58r -- 5. Another short treatise on the ways in which the body, the heart, and the soul are to render thanks to God, at 58r -- 6. A short tract on the Ten Commandments, written in a different hand from the rest of the codex, possibly early 14th-century, at 58r-59r.
