Abstract:

The collection depicts religious leaders, congregants, and church-related events and activities of mainly African-American Christian faiths, from the early 20th century to the 1980s.

The collection consists of individual and group portraits and candid shots of clergy, notably bishops, congregations, choirs and musicians, church organizations, religious orders, and some secular figures. Also depicted are views of religious services, ordinations, sacramental rites, processions, church-sponsored events, and meetings. Of note are images of Black Muslims, including Elijah Muhammad and Wallace Muhammad, between the late 1950s to mid-1980s. Images of church buildings may be found in the "Church Buildings" collection and the W. Joseph Black Photograph Collection.
