Abstract:

This dissertation explores the challenges of doing ministry in a multicultural, multi-racial, and multi-theology environment, and examines the influences of personality types in church affiliation. This is an accurate picture of Army chapel congregations. To see and appreciate the differences present in chapel congregations, the history of various denominational, and the cultural and racial backgrounds of participants were studied, in addition to personality profiles using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). These areas of study gave a framework from which to view the typical Army chapel congregation. In the area of worship, the Old Testament Tabernacle was used as an example ofprecedence for worship as it is practiced today in many Christian churches. The project was a one day seminar/workshop involving thirty adult participants. Their participation included a degree of pre-work consisting of taking the MBTI, filling out a personal data sheet, and taking two small surveys dealing with behavioral and organizational preferences. The workshop provided instruction in Church History, the Old Testament tabernacle as a type for Christian worship, and instruction in personality profiles based on the MBTI. Participants in the project learned about the differences that are found in chapel communities and how to appreciate their influences in the way Christians in Army congregations conduct corporate worship.
