Abstract:

"3 Heliotype plates by the Heliotype Printing Co., Boston, with 5 photographs of Alaskan natives. 5 Photo-engravings from photographs of scenery. All were taken by Rev. J.A[dolphus].H. Hartmann and W.H. Weinland: a full account appears in Appendix I, p. 55. The ethnographic interest of these plates of Native Americans and the attempts to westernize them generally outweigh their pictorial values, except for one man standing against mossy rocks, dressed in full skins, which captures his dignity. Interestingly there also appear copies of this book with plates by the Photogravure Co., New York ..."--Hanson Collection catalog, p. 87.
