Abstract:

This case study presents the overview of reviews used to identify and assess financial and non-financial incentives to recruit and retain health care providers. The literature on incentives to recruit and retain health care providers is vast, especially when we expand the search to include health care providers working in different geographical locations (e.g., rural) and work environments. We found this topic was the subject of many studiesfar too many for a systematic or narrative review, especially given our short timeline. We therefore chose to use an overview of reviews methodology to summarize evidence identified in systematic and narrative reviews and further hone the most effective incentives. To do this, we had to identify a means for assessing the quality of the systematic reviews, agree on the inclusion criteria, and find the most effective way to extract the necessary information.
