Designed by Philadelphia Quaker architect Addison Hutton, Beechwood was the private retreat of tobacco merchant Stephen Fuguet.
Beechwood is a blend of the High Victorian Gothic and Queen Anne Revival styles.
The Friends to Save Beechwood, working with The Shipley School, raised $2.85 million to restore the Beechwood Estate. Frens and Frens, LLC, Restoration Architects were retained in 1998 to create a Preservation Plan and in January 2000, general contractor E. Allen Reeves, Inc., began the restoration.
The goal of the Friends to Save Beechwood was to restore the exterior of the building to its original 1877 appearance. Exterior restoration included removing stucco from the elaborate tri-colored brickwork and reconstruction of the porches. On the interior, the design of four faculty apartments and rehabilitation of the first floor and main stair as conference and reception space for The Shipley School were achieved. Openings between the lower level rooms, which probably featured paired pocket doors upon original construction were retained, and were visually articulated with arched screens and portieres. The color schemes and furnishings are reflective of the period. Construction was completed in January, 2002.
Historic paint analysis done by: Richard Wolbers, Ph.D., Winterthur Museum.
Beachwood is located at Montgomery Ave. and Roberts Rd., Bryn Mawr, Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, Pa.
