Abstract:

"Few cities in the world harbor such a wealth of 16th and 17th century monuments as Cartagena de Indias, on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, which was declared a "Cultural Patrimony of Mankind" by the UNESCO in 1984. Likewise, there are few architects who are skilled in the restoration and conservation of these historic buildings. Among these, Colombian architect Alvaro Barrera is foremost in the conversion of colonial buildings to modern uses. He has restored half of the 17th century two-storey houses that stand within the fortified walls of the city's historic center. He has done a similar job in the colonial district of Panama City, which dates back to the 18th century. This has been the focus of his work for the past five years." "The interventions of Barrera have a very special stamp. Respecting the very essence of these venerable monuments of Spanish origin, he has turned them into beautiful public buildings, hotels and restaurants, and luxurious homes with all modern conveniences, without jeopardizing their historic value. His sense of materials and colors allows him to harmonize different concepts and functions, a talent which is also seen in his designs for contemporary buildings, which make use of elements like arches and vaults and employ components that range from adobe to metallic structures. This book about the work of Alvaro Barrera is a veritable revelation. Two thirds of it is devoted to his superb interventions in the colonial buildings of Cartagena, Tunja and Bogota and its surrounding savanna, in Colombia, and to those in Panama City and other cities of the Caribbean. The remainder focuses on his innovative modern architectural designs." "This book is a must for anyone who is interested in the restoration, preservation and conversion of historic buildings."--BOOK JACKET.
