Abstract:

Northern abalone, Haliotis kamtschatkana, have been protected by harvest closures since 1990 due to continued low population levels. Periodic surveys of index sites have been completed since 1978 to monitor the status of abalone populations in British Columbia (BC). In May 2007, a total of 559 abalone were found at 66 of the 82 index sites surveyed along the southeast coast of the Queen Charlotte Islands (QCI). Mean shell length (SL) was 61.5 mm and 6.3% of abalone surveyed were large adult size ([greater than or equal to] 100 mm SL). The overall density of abalone was 0.43 " 0.05 (SE) abalone/m². Densities of large adult ([greater than or equal to] 100 mm SL) and of mature ([greater than or equal to] 70 mm SL) abalone (0.03 abalone/m2 and 0.15 abalone/m², respectively) were significantly lower in 2007 than all other survey years, with the exception of 2002. The density of immature abalone has significantly increased since the last survey in 2002. Despite a slight, but statistically non-significant, increase in 'all sizes' density over the 2002 values, there has been no clear evidence of a recovery of northern abalone populations in southeast Queen Charlotte Islands since the fishery closure in 1990. Poaching continues to be the main concern preventing the recovery of abalone in southeast QCI, BC.
